VOSA Sieve Tray Column

An experimental loop for development of PbLi purification technology for use in Fusion facility environment. The unit is a non-active laboratory universal technical set of loop conception, which creates an environment for controlled release of contaminants from molten PbLi in a form of falling dropplets. Its main purpose is to collect basic engineering data about contaminant release rate as well as Sieve tray Column operating characteristics such as falling droplet properties and their optimisation to increse the efficiency of the technology for the liquid metal purification.

The unit was developped using the know-how off the group of Liquid metal technologies as oneof the key devices in the frame of the EUROfusion project.

  • Liquid metal volume in the loop ≈ 10 L
  • Maximum achievable temperature ~ 550 °C
  • Estimated operating temperature _ 300-500 °C
  • Maximum gas flow rate ~ 1 L/min
  • Operating pressure _ 10 Pa - 120 kPa
  • Composition of the liquid metal _ Pb - Li (85 - 15 mol.%)
  • Total input of heating loop_ max. 7.5 kW
